Good morning! I’m back with another episode of my WHOLE LUNG LAVAGE report. I hope you enjoyed and found my first part useful and informative.
We left off with me being in recovery…
After a while, a room was cleaned and prepared and the recovery nurse and a support staffer wheeled me down the hall to the 6th floor overflow section (formerly known as 6 ICU). It can be a bit disconcerting because as you arrive in 6ICU you see all these signs about ICU and you’re thinking “Am I in ICU?” but no rest assured they just continue to use the acronym.
Hospital Rooms/6ICU at Cedars Sinai
The rooms in 6ICU were old school and there was none of the Amazon Alexa technology. But the rooms were functional and spacious enough (with 2 chairs) that both my parents were able to visit and even when a friend visited all 4 of us were comfortable in the room. Attached to the room was a toilet and wash basin (no shower). The room also had a window with a beautiful view of the Santa Monica mountains.
Hospital Staff/6ICU at Cedars Sinai
The best part of being in the hospital was the terrific nursing staff! I must have told the Nurse Manager (Carol) several times how wonderful my primary nurse (Irina) was. She was super sweet and it turns out she hails from Kaliningrad and my sweet Natasha had previously sent me a postcard from that very city! What a small world?! Seemed like it was just meant to be.
At Cedars-Sinai, the nurse-patient ratio is 1:3. How incredible is that?! I hardly pressed the call button before either the nurse or the clinical support staff would come running. It was also nice that being in room 6012 I was directly across from the nurses station meaning I could even hear the hum of their voices when they chatted. I probably could have shouted if necessary and they’d hear me. Unlike Los Robles Hospital (our local hospital) where I would have to press the nurses button a good 1/2 hour before I really needed to use the restroom because it would take that long to get someone’s help, here it was often immediate! And they treated you with such compassion and kindness and care. I felt like we were good friends and that I was in very good and capable hands.
While I was at Cedars-Sinai, the amazing staff I had were Irina (RN), John (RN), and I am ashamed to say I cannot remember the nurses’ names from Wednesday night or Thursday (a floater who usually worked in the ER) nor the names of the two support staff who were exceptional that worked with Irina and John Monday – Tuesday. The only poor staffing experience I had was with the Wednesday support staffer who kept making mistakes and forgetting things. Nothing horrid but the service was subpar to what I had previously experienced from the lady and gentleman from Monday and Tuesday who were so on top of things.
A shout out to Carol the Nurse Manager and also to the male nurse supervisor (again the name escapes me) from Monday and Tuesday who were both so lovely when I saw them. I was especially impressed that Carol made a point of coming in to say hi and introduce herself. And when I was leaving she came over to give me a hug and wish me well. Seriously, how awesome is that??!
I don’t know anywhere else you would get such compassionate service.
