Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day is a traditional English carol with an unknown publication date, although the lyrics hint at a Medieval date.

advent

On the 4th Sunday of Advent, we light the candle of the ANGELS. It is sometimes known as the Candle of Peace.

While we spent the first two weeks of Advent focused on Christ’s coming, the third week focused on the anticipation of Christ’s coming again, it is the fourth (and final) week we spend focusing on the Angels’ proclamation of peace that Christ Child brought to the earth!

The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. – Luke 1:30-33

Day 24. Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day is a traditional English carol with an unknown publication date, although the lyrics hint at a Medieval date. There have been various adaptations but the most famous and often used is John Gardner’s adaptation.

The song’s verses are sung and told from the perspective of Jesus.

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day Lyrics

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day;
I would my true love did so chance
To see the legend of my play,
To call my true love to my dance;

CHORUS
Sing, oh! my love, oh! my love, my love, my love,
This have I done for my true love.

Then was I born of a virgin pure,
Of her I took fleshly substance
Thus was I knit to man’s nature
To call my true love to my dance.

In a manger laid, and wrapped I was
So very poor, this was my chance
Betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass
To call my true love to my dance.

Then afterwards baptized I was;
The Holy Ghost on me did glance,
My Father’s voice heard I from above,
To call my true love to my dance.

Into the desert I was led,
Where I fasted without substance;
The Devil bade me make stones my bread,
To have me break my true love’s dance.

The Jews on me they made great suit,
And with me made great variance,
Because they loved darkness rather than light,
To call my true love to my dance.

For thirty pence Judas me sold,
His covetousness for to advance:
Mark whom I kiss, the same do hold!
The same is he shall lead the dance.

Before Pilate the Jews me brought,
Where Barabbas had deliverance;
They scourged me and set me at nought,
Judged me to die to lead the dance.

Then on the cross hanged I was,
Where a spear my heart did glance;
There issued forth both water and blood,
To call my true love to my dance.

Then down to hell I took my way
For my true love’s deliverance,
And rose again on the third day,
Up to my true love and the dance.

Then up to heaven I did ascend,
Where now I dwell in sure substance
On the right hand of God, that man
May come unto the general dance.

Scripture Reading for Day 24 of Advent –

Philippians 2:5-7

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

Zechariah 2:10-11

‘Shout and be glad, O Daughter of Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you,’ declares the Lord. ‘Many nations will be joined with the Lord in that day and will become my people. I will live among you and you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you’”
