Pet Loss Quotes and Poems
Yesterday, our beautiful angel – Shadow – passed away. No matter how many years a dog has been part of your life nor how long you are prepared for the passing of your beloved pet, it is never the right time. I tried to think of how I could best express my love for Shadow and heartbreak.
My heart has been bubbling over as I go through photos and sadly I do not think that I have the strength to write something true and honest to share right now so I am pulling together 14 Pet Loss Quotes and Poems along with some favorite photos and will hopefully share a eulogy for Shadow in the coming days. Enjoy.
#1. Anatole France
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains un-awakened.”
#2. John Galsworthy
“Not the least hard thing to bear when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away with them so many years of our own lives.” John Galsworthy
#3. Bob Barker
“A person who has never owned a dog has missed a wonderful part of life.” Bob Barker
#4. Erica Jong
“Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love. The depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog, it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big.” Erica Jong
#5. Gene Hill
“Nobody can fully understand the meaning of love unless he’s owned a dog. A dog can show you more honest affection with a flick of his tail than a man can gather through a lifetime of handshakes.” Gene Hill
#6. Ben Hur Lampman
“The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master.” Ben Hur Lampman
#7. Sir Walter Scott
“The misery of keeping a dog is his dying so soon. But, to be sure, if he lived for fifty years and then died, what would become of me.” Sir Walter Scott
#8. Dean Koontz
“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” Dean Koontz
#9. Elizabeth Barrett Browning
“His ears were often the first thing to catch my tears.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning

#10. Marjorie Garber
“If you have a dog, you will most likely outlive it; to get a dog is to open yourself to profound joy and, prospectively, to equally profound sadness.” Marjorie Garber
#12. Rudyard Kipling
“When the fourteen years that nature permits are closing in … you will find- you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.” Rudyard Kipling
This quote from “The Power of a Dog” is so exact since in August or September would have been Shadow’s 14th birthday. Just shy by 2-3 months.
#13. Isaiah 11:16
And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid, and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little boy will lead them. Isaiah 11:6
Trivia. There is no actual verse about the lion and the lamb.
“No matter how or when we lose our furry friends, their love lasts a lifetime.” Anonymous
We miss you, sweet Shadow, and imagine you leaping with joy and good health in Heaven with Sheba, Max, and Thursday and all the other dogs who’ve gone before you.
