What is If I Break About?

The If I Break series by Portia Moore is a complex and emotional rollercoaster about a woman named Lauren who falls in love with a man named Cal Scott, only to navigate through a web of secrets, twists, and multiple personalities, ultimately questioning the depth and boundaries of true love.

In the first book, Lauren Brooks is determined to escape her small town, attend her dream school in Chicago, and graduate debt-free. Juggling a heavy course load and a job at a popular nightclub, she has no time for distractions or guys who only want one thing. But then she meets Cal, a troublemaker with a hidden agenda. Despite her reservations, she falls for him and they marry, thinking it’s the start of their happily ever after. Little does she know, Cal’s secret comes at a high price, and being his wife will test her in ways she never expected.

I don’t want to give away too much. The above description of the book and series are taken from the official book descriptions. The only spoiler/tease I will confirm is that yes, this series deals with Dissociative Disorders or what is still commonly thought of as Multiple Personalities.

My Initial Thoughts on If I Break

I first picked up a copy of If I Break Book #1 from my local library’s digital account on Overdrive.com and was hooked from the words “Here he comes.” I must have read the book through from start to finish in one night and went and bought the rest of the books in the series immediately from Amazon. It is a good thing I have a full-time job which meant I had to take a mental break from reading the series because the zingers and twists that Portia throws at the reader are not for the faint of heart.

While it is not my usual reading style, I found this series to be something special. Interestingly enough I could not connect with nor finish even book 1 in Portia’s other series HER that has a similar premise.

Formerly known as multiple personality disorder, Dissociative Disorders involve “switching” to other identities. As the Mayo Clinic puts it, “You may feel as if you have two or more people talking or living inside your head. You may feel like you’re possessed by other identities. Each identity may have a unique name, personal history and features.
