Can you believe it is already December? Captain Hastings has opened his adorable doggy advent calendar and the Christmas gifts are wrapped. So how about catching a Christmas episode? One of my all-time favorites holiday murder mysteries is the 1994 “Hercule Poirot’s Christmas” that you can catch on Britbox (Amazon Prime Video).

Hercule Poirot’s Christmas

Synopsis:

Poirot is invited to spend Christmas at a wealthy man’s country estate where one of the party is murdered and in true Christie fashion, all the other houseguests have a motive.

The 1994 episode starring David Suchet as Poirot and Philip Jackson (Inspector Japp) does a terrific job of not only highlighting the friendship between Poirot and Japp but also the yuletide festivities with classic Christmas carols. I especially enjoyed meeting Japp’s jolly in-laws ever so briefly as they sang carols around the piano.

Quotes from Hercule Poirot’s Christmas

Hercule Poirot: Hercule Poirot is a detective not a bodyguard, monsieur.

The Joyous Living: Hercule Poirot's Christmas

Hercule Poirot: I’ve come to rescue you, mon ami.

Hercule Poirot: Ah, chief inspector. You have been thinking again. I have warned you of this before.

Guest Stars of Hercule Poirot’s Christmas

Mark Tandy (The Buccaneers, The Crown),

Brian Gwaspari (Remington Steele, Eastenders),

and Vernon Dobtcheff (The Spy Who Loved Me, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) shine in this episode.

Dobtcheff in particular is just as you’d imagine from the book – monstrous and grotesque. The ultimate Scrooge.
