Harvey Milk Day

Harvey Milk, former San Francisco supervisor, was born on 22 May 1930 (90 years ago today). Perhaps you remember his assassination on 27 November 1978? Or perhaps you heard Annette Bening’s Dianne Feinstein mention it in Amazon’s The Report?

For those who don’t know the history – former Supervisor Dan White was angry that Mayor George Moscone had refused to reappoint him to his seat on the Board of Supervisors, and that Supervisor Harvey Milk had lobbied heavily against his reappointment. White was arrested and tried for first degree murder. White’s defense team proved to the jury that he was depressed at the time of the shootings which meant he could not have premeditated the murders. He was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Two years after White was released from prison, he committed suicide.

In honor of Harvey Milk Day, here are 3 of my favorite timeless LGBT Movies:

What is your favorite LGBT movie performance? #lgbt #movies #actors #tv #film #thejoyousliving

Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington were memorizing in this 1993 legal drama about a lawyer (Tom Hanks) who’s been unfairly fired because he has AIDS and when no one else will take his case, Denzel Washington’s character reluctantly steps forward and they form a friendship built on respect.

PG-13 for graphic language and thematic material

Grace and Frankie (Netflix)

Grace and Frankie on Netflix has to be one of the funniest t.v. shows (adult audiences only) around with amazing performances by Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin (9 to 5), Sam Waterston (Law and Order) and Martin Sheen (Gettysburg).

Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen are unlike anything we’ve seen from them before as the closeted gay couple who divorce their wives in order to marry. They’re so dedicated to the roles that they’re unlike any other role. For instance, re-watching Gettysburg, I was shocked it was the same Martin Sheen playing Robert E. Lee.

MA for adult situations, adult language (including an use of the “C” word), drug and alcohol usage

That Touch of Mink

This 1962 romantic comedy starring Cary Grant and Doris Day includes a hilarious subplot about Philip (Cary Grant) and his financial manager, Roger (Gig Young, The Three Musketeers). Roger sees a therapist (Alan Hewitt, My Favorite Martian) who mistakenly believes Roger is in love with Philip.

TV-PG for thematic content, drinking and smoking
