Today’s film recommendation is Handel’s Messiah Rocks, a professionally filmed music concert featuring the Boston Pops!
A Modern Adaptation of Handel’s Messiah
Some of you might think that Handel’s Messiah was written about the Christmas story but that would only be 1/2 true. In fact a great portion of the oratorio features the Easter story too.
Jason Howland and Dani Davis adapted the classic oratorio with a contemporary and understandable libretto and incorporated a rock band.
For their special 2009 recording featuring The Boston Pops, the cast includes:
LaChanze (“The Color Purple“), MiG Ayesa, and J. Robert Spencer (“Next to Normal“)
Musical Highlights from Handel’s Messiah Rocks!
While this modern adaptation does not include the entire oratorio, you’ll likely recognize many of the songs including favorites like:
Comfort Ye
He’ll Come to Glory
He is Fire
Rejoice
Behold the Lamb of God
He Was Despised
King of Glory
How Beautiful
and of course
Hallelujah!
I understand that this may not be everyone’s cup of tea but for those who want to add something different to their music collection may I highly suggest Handel’s Messiah Rocks! that can be found on CD and a special PBS DVD featuring the Boston Pops Orchestra.
