sharing is caring

One year ago, Half Agony, Half Hope was released into the world.

At the time, I believed the story was complete. It had been written, edited, and shared with readers who connected deeply with Rick Wentworth’s journey of survival, healing, and learning how to live again. I did not plan to revisit it. I did not plan to expand it. I certainly did not expect to create the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition.

And yet, over the past year, one question stayed with me: was this story told in the most thoughtful, reader-centered way it could be?

That question is what led to the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition.

Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition Book by Joy Michelle Austin

What Is the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition?

The Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition is not a rewritten version of my debut novel. It is a refined and expanded edition designed to improve the reader experience while preserving the emotional depth of the original story.

Rick’s journey through trauma, rescue, and rebuilding remains unchanged. What has evolved is how key moments are handled and how readers are invited to engage with the story.

The Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition reflects growth—not just in writing, but in understanding how stories impact readers.

Why I Updated the Trauma Scene in the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition

One of the most important changes in the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition is the revision of the initial assault scene.

In the original version, the abuse was veiled rather than explicit, but it still carried a heavy emotional weight. And to be fair—the book really does live up to its title. It is half agony. I did warn you. 😉

But over time, one of the things I heard most often from readers was that they found themselves skimming parts of those darker sections. Not because the story didn’t matter, but because the intensity made it difficult to stay present with it.

That feedback stayed with me.

In this updated edition, the initial moment is now handled as a fade-to-black transition.

This change does not remove or minimize what Rick endured. His trauma is still real, and it still shapes everything that follows. But the focus has been intentionally shifted. Instead of asking readers to sit in the full weight of the harm, the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition invites them to remain in the story without needing to pull away.

The emphasis moves forward—toward healing, toward restoration, and toward the part of the story that was always meant to carry the most weight:

Not just what Rick survived, but how he learns to live again.

New Bonus Chapter in the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition: Marianne’s POV

The Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition also includes a brand new bonus chapter told from Marianne’s point of view during the rescue.

This moment has always been central to the story, but experiencing it through Marianne’s perspective adds a new emotional layer. While Rick’s experience reflects survival, Marianne’s captures love, urgency, and the turning point where everything changes.

This addition deepens the emotional impact of the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition without altering the story’s direction.

Companion Devotional in the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition

Readers connected with more than just the plot—they connected with the deeper themes of identity, faith, and restoration woven throughout Rick’s story. This devotional was created to give those themes space to breathe beyond the page.

What makes it especially meaningful is that it follows the stanzas of the poem Rick writes within the story itself. Each section reflects on a different part of that poem, allowing readers to pause and sit with the emotions, questions, and truths behind his words.

It asks what it means to rebuild after loss, how to live with what cannot be undone, and where God meets us in the process of becoming whole again. It takes the emotional core of the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition and brings it into a more personal, reflective space.

This is where the story becomes something more than something you read.

It becomes something you carry.

New Cover for the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition

For the first time, I took the original photo myself and used it as the foundation for the design. It was then artfully refined and brought to life by my cover artist. There was something meaningful about being part of that process from the very beginning—capturing an image that visually represents the heart of the story.

It is still Half Agony, Half Hope.

But this version carries the quiet shift toward something more complete.

The Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition also features a new cover that reflects the evolution of the story.

While the narrative itself remains the same, the visual presentation now aligns more clearly with the movement from survival to restoration. It represents what this edition is truly about: becoming whole and does a better job of connecting this story with the companion novel, Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition.

And this time, the cover feels even more personal.

Was the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition Necessary?

Short answer? No… and yes.

No, in the sense that the original Half Agony, Half Hope already told Rick’s story. It was complete. Readers connected with it. It did what it was meant to do.

But yes—because over time, I realized there was a way to tell that same story with more care for the reader experience.

I heard from readers who struggled through some of the darker moments. I saw where people felt the weight of the story so heavily that they had to pull back just to keep going. And while the book is meant to carry that weight—it is half agony, after all 😉—it was never meant to push readers out of the story entirely.

This edition exists because I wanted readers to stay.

To stay with Rick.
To stay through the hard parts.
To make it all the way to the healing.

The Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition doesn’t change the story. It changes how it’s held.

And for me, that made it worth it.

My hope is that you won’t just read this version—you’ll stay with it, grow with it, and walk all the way through Rick’s story into the healing on the other side.

One Year Later: Why the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition Matters

One year after its original release, Half Agony, Half Hope remains the same at its core. It is still Rick’s story of survival and healing. But the Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition reflects a deeper understanding of how that story can be shared.

For returning readers, it offers a more thoughtful and layered experience. For new readers, it represents the most complete version of the story.

Because in the end, this was never just a story about agony or even hope.

The Half Agony Half Hope Wholly Free Edition is a story about what it means to become wholly free.
