Looking for an allergy friendly afternoon tea that goes beyond the usual gluten and nut warnings? The Rose Garden Tea Room at The Huntington Library in San Marino handled our less common allergies — stevia, gelatin, and gums — with a level of care that’s genuinely rare in fine dining.

Planning Your Visit to The Huntington Library: Hours and Admission Tickets
The Huntington is open Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Tuesdays, with check-in generally closing at 4:15 p.m.. General admission runs $29 for adults on weekdays and $34 on weekends, holidays, and peak seasons, with discounted rates for seniors, students, military, and youth, and free entry for members and children under four.
Reservations are required for Friday through Sunday visits, holidays, and peak seasons like Thanksgiving week, and are strongly recommended on weekdays too since walk-in space is limited. Budget-conscious visitors should note that Free Day tickets are released the last Thursday of every month at 9 a.m. and tend to sell out almost immediately.
As always, please check the official website for exact times and prices.
What Can I Do At The Huntington Library?
Beyond the Rose Garden, the estate spans about 130 acres and includes the Chinese Garden with its lake and stone bridges, the Japanese Garden with koi ponds and a moon bridge, and the Desert Garden’s striking cactus collection. Art lovers can also visit the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art and see works like Gainsborough’s The Blue Boy inside the main galleries, though the historic Library exhibition halls remain temporarily closed for construction.

Because most visitors spend three to five hours on-site, pairing your tea reservation with a garden walk before or afterwards makes for a full and well-paced day.
Why Hidden Allergens Like Stevia, Gelatin, and Gums Are Hard to Navigate
Unlike gluten or nuts, stevia, gelatin, and gums (such as xanthan or guar gum) rarely appear on standard allergen menus, which means diners often have to catch them buried in ingredient lists for sauces, sweets, and thickened creams. Gelatin in particular hides under names like hydrolyzed collagen or animal protein, and gums are frequently used in reduced-sugar desserts and stabilized creams — exactly the kind of items found in a traditional tea spread.

That’s what made our experience at the Huntington stand out: these aren’t allergies most kitchens are prepared to flag proactively.
Our Honest Take on the Allergy Experience at The Huntington Library
Our server and chef took our allergies seriously from the moment we sat down, proactively offering substitute dishes for anything that wasn’t safe and checking in throughout the seating to make sure everything felt right. That kind of attentiveness matters most with less common allergens, since it means the kitchen is actually reading labels and reformulating dishes rather than pointing to a generic gluten free or vegan menu.

If you manage allergies that fall outside the usual gluten, dairy, or nut categories, this is one of the few afternoon tea experiences we’d trust.
Booking at the Rose Garden Tea Room: What You Need to Know
Rose Garden Tea Room seatings run Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with reservations recommended given how quickly seats fill.
Importantly, a tea room reservation does not include general admission — you’ll need a separate same-day ticket to the gardens on top of your tea booking.
Book your tea seating one to two months in advance for the best availability, especially heading into the busy fall and holiday season.
Tips for Booking Afternoon Tea with Less Common Allergies
- Name your specific allergens by ingredient, not category — say “gelatin” and “gums like xanthan or guar” rather than just “food allergies,” since these hide under technical names on labels
- Ask specifically about sweeteners used in desserts and clotted cream, since stevia sometimes replaces sugar in “lighter” tea room offerings
- Book one to two months ahead, since fall seatings fill quickly
- Bring a separate same day general admission ticket to the gardens, required in addition to the tea reservation

Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Go to The Huntington Library
Beyond the allergy accommodations, fall adds an extra draw: The Huntington’s free “Music in the Rose Garden” concert series runs every Monday afternoon through mid-November, pairing perfectly with a tea seating before or after.
Between the golden autumn light in the Rose Garden and a kitchen willing to work around uncommon allergens, it’s easy to see why this tea room earns a spot as SoCal’s top allergy friendly afternoon tea destination.
