Ah yes. Today is our 2nd day of the 2019 A to Z Challenge and for the letter B we present the mythical and magical Brigadoon with music and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe.
The musical involves two American tourists from NYC who stumble upon Brigadoon, a mysterious and charming Scottish village that appears for only one day every 100 years. Of course there’s a romance and it’s between Tommy, one of the tourists, and Fiona, a young woman from Brigadoon who’s sister, Jean, is getting married today.
The music has become staples and been recording dozens of times as both cast recordings and part of solo albums. The story has been adapted and filmed for t.v. and film starring the likes of Robert Goulet and Gene Kelly. It most recently was performed in New York (2017) with Kelli O’Hara and Patrick Wilson as Fiona and Tommy.
If I played for you “Almost Like Being In Love” and “Heather on the Hill”, the two main love themes from Brigadoon, you’ll likely recognize either tune. There’s even an album on Amazon with 18 versions of “Almost Like Being in Love”!
